Term 2 Week 3 April 30, 2020

Term 2 Week 3: Sharing of Learning from April 29

What a treat to get to catch up with the first two groups from Room 15 on Google Meets.
Please check your school email inbox, for the meeting code, five minutes before the meeting then wait until the scheduled time to join your meeting. As a Year 5 student, we want you to be independent in your learning and navigate this by yourself. A parent or caregiver may need to help you the first time you try to get on. These meetings are for students with their classmates. So far, so good!

Let's do a WHOLE class Google Meet on Friday at 1:00 pm (I think I say 1:55 pm in the video - ignore that!) The code will come to your email at 12:55 pm. Silly Mrs Lewis!!

We have some more great learning stories on our slide deck today. Keep up the great creative, critical and innovative thinking, as well as the clever crafting and artistic skills. The poets, authors and readers are also to be celebrated, along with our logical, analytical mathematicians and the observant, hypothesising scientists - in the kitchen and in the home Science Lab. You are covering many curriculum areas while using your GEMS!

We hope you enjoy the new slides...

Happy Birthday, Captain Tom Moore! 100 years old. His walk of 100 laps around his yard raised $60 million for the NHS in the UK. He also received 125, 000 birthday cards. That is amazing. Capt Tom is a true hero - he fought in WWII and now he is helping the fight against a new enemy - Covid-19. Thank you, Capt Tom.

Term 2 Week 3 April 29, 2020

Welcome to Week 3 of Term 2!

We have a new Distance Learning slide deck for you on our 'Learning At Home' page of this blog (see the tab above). Please make sure you check out the range and variety of learning activities that are available for you to engage with. The Week 1 and 2 slide deck remains there for those of you who still want to choose from that.

The provocation for many activities is 'The Plight of the Sea Turtle' - make sure you read that first. There is also another story about Torty and a legend about Kauila. I wonder if you know the difference between a turtle and a tortoise?

It is really important that you check your inbox for your school email - I have sent a number of links, codes and instructions to support your learning this week. If you need help - please ask. The first of our Google Meets kicks off this morning at 11:00 am and then another at 11:30 am. We hope that if you are timetabled for those slots that you can join us. I will send you (school email inbox) the meet link/code just before your meeting so that you can get ready. If you are not scheduled for today, I look forward to seeing you on your 'day'. The timetable also has the schedule for next week - put those in your diary.

Thank you for sharing your learning for this morning's slide deck, some items were specially held over as we commemorated an ANZAC themed slide deck on Friday.

Day Eight, April 24, 2020

Tomorrow is ANZAC Day: April 25

ANZAC Day is a very special day to remember those who fought and sacrificed for our country so that we can enjoy the freedom we have today. The cost of lives and the impact on families was huge. We take time to pause and remember them.

Each year on Anzac Day, New Zealanders (and Australians) mark the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings of 25 April 1915. On that day, thousands of young men, far from their homes, stormed the beaches on the Gallipoli Peninsula in what is now Turkey.  Gallipoli continues to be a focus, however, all wars and conflicts have become part of the ANZAC remembrance of those who paid the price. Our Freedom is not free - it comes with a heavy price. Let's use it for good and to lead full lives focused on being kind.

The first two weeks of distance learning has been an interesting and rewarding journey together. Thank you for engaging in your learning the way that you have. If you know you could do more, I would be happy to receive what you send in - after all, we are going into Week 3 of Term 2!

Have a great weekend - be kind, be safe, and be happy in your bubble!

(Correction: I made a mistake in my video - Alert Level 4 until Monday 11:59 pm (not Tuesday 11:59 pm as I said).

Term 2 Week 2 April 23, 2020

Share of Learning from Day Six:

While we have less learning to share on our slide deck, I know that you will enjoy the great projects that have come in. I am thinking it may mean that you are taking time to polish off the quality of a project, adding a critical reflection, doing other online learning activities OR your bubble was enjoying the great weather together

That said, thank you for the reflections I have received. What a privilege to read these! They were honest and a great insight into how you are coping with this unusual way to 'do school'. I will only share these reflections if you ask me to and looking forward to reading more.

Keeping the learning going, especially when you have to make all these choices. It can either be motivating or make you feel overwhelmed. Let me encourage you to focus on one thing at a time and do that to a high standard by using your critical reflection on how it can be improved. Do this before rushing off to the next project. Remember you don't have to do everything - but what you choose to do, do it well! Keep driving your learning so you make the most of your opportunity to do things at your own pace and choice - at home!

We would love to receive your learning projects about our Anzacs so that we can share it on our special Anzac slide deck tomorrow. Thank you for your contributions so far.

Please make sure you know how to get on to your school email and that you are checking this regularly. Your school email, our shared Google Drive and this blog are the main ways we will communicate with our class. Let me know if you are having trouble with this. PLEASE put your work in our shared Drive so that I can comment on it and we can keep a record of your distance learning.

How To See Older Posts - Instructions

Key messages for today - we are loving the learning you are doing. To take it to the next level, make sure you are including a reflection with your projects. You may like to tell us about the inspiration for your project, how you would do it differently if you did it again, what you have learned or whether it has been helpful for you.

Make use you are using your school Google Drive folders for documenting your learning - that way I am able to see it and make comments, suggestions and ask questions. Thank you!

On Friday, we are going to share our ANZAC learning. Send your ANZAC learning by the end of school on Thursday - lest we forget. We want to make sure we remember them in our bubbles.

Term 2 Week 1 April 17 2020

Welcome back to Day Three!

Day Two Learning: Share and Shine

Where do I start?? So much learning and activity - thank you for sharing, Room 15.

Liam wrote about a big Ice Block scaring an old man - luckily the old man was clever enough to push the Ice Block into the water to try and melt it, jump out quickly and run home for a hot coffee to warm up! Great authorship, Liam.

Milana also put her hand to writing with a great little story about the Unicorn twins, Stardust and Pixie. They ran faster than a cheetah and managed to avoid being captured by the hunters who were looking for dinner! Lucky they got home and could enjoy their Unicorn Ice Cream Cake, the secret source of their speediness. I wish I could eat an ice cream cake that would make me fast!!

Isaac and Alex produced great storyboards of 'The Legend of the Volcanoes of Tāmaki Makaurau'. They cleverly split the story up into their main parts and can now use this as a plan for their comic strip (graphic novel) if they wanted to. They can draw pictures of the characters and have speech or thought bubbles coming from them. I look forward to seeing some finished graphic novels.

Donnie and his catapult  Click on this link to see Donnie's engineering masterpiece! awesome job Donne - I see you have been perfecting the catapult's aim. Three pointer!!

Shreya has been doing a great research project on Viruses. She looked at three viruses: chickenpox, measles and the flu. Shreya outlined what they are, how do they spread, how to avoid being infected and included lots of interesting facts about viruses. I learnt a lot too - thank you, Shreya!

Many, many of you have been helping out in the kitchen - baking, cooking meals, etc. Keep that up so that you will be an amazing cook for your family and your future flatmates! Brandon, Isaac (see the picture below), Jessica, Madison to name just a few. I forgot to write all your names down...BUT it was a very common theme when I was talking to you all. So impressive.

James shared what his motivation was behind making a bow and arrow yesterday - it was from the sixth book of the Ranger's Apprentice books by John Flanagan called 'The Siege of Macindaw'. He likes the character, Will, because he can fire off 3 arrows before the first one hits the target! James also said his favourite part is when they siege a castle with only 40 men and one siege ladder - they used a cool strategy. (Sorry for the spoiler alert!) James is clearly showing his love of reading and still working towards his Reading Challenge cards. We'll sign those off back at school - write down your titles, everyone!

Isabella, Cimone and Matthew J designed and created Kahoots - unfortunately, I haven't been able to play or view them with the links you are sending in (or the game PIN). Make sure you play them with your family so that your good work can be shared. Thank you - I'll keep trying.

Olivia and her clever Dad helping the family build a Tree Hut

Olivia being creative
So many of you are also doing great things with your fitness and mindfulness. That is so good to hear how you are looking after your body and well being. Isabella designed and shared an obstacle course, Olivia can be seen in her photo doing exercises and Yi Fan told me how he is practising his basketball and tennis on the unfinished foundations of his pool! Lucky I rang Liam just before he started his mindfulness session - I would have hated to interrupt his family's calm and quiet moment!

The designers out there are also being amazingly creative with their projects - check out Olivia's tree hut created by the whole family! What a great place to take an apple, cushion and a rug to read in a quiet spot. Just fantastic. The best feature is the firemen's pole!!
Cimone's design of the senior playground has some familiar features mixed in with some new ideas. I love the level of detail you have gone to. You would have needed a lot of patience to build that - well done.

Keep sharing your wonderful projects, thinking and experiences. We are loving learning about your learning!!
Olivia looking after her well being - getting physical!

Isaac's yummy Anzac cookies - recipe on the Anzac Hyperdoc. So good he couldn't stop eating them!
Milana's colour butterfly full of her favourite things!
Cimone's fantastic playground design.
